THE KAUFMAN CENTER HONORS

Gala

The Kaufman Center’s annual Gala celebration will be held on Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at 6:00 pm at the Mandarin Oriental in Time Warner Center. The evening will feature special performances from world-renowned artists, as well as appearances by students from the Center’s Special Music School and Lucy Moses School.

Phyllis Feder, immediate-past Chairman of the Board and longtime Kaufman Center supporter, will receive the 2008 Distinguished Service Award; Joseph A. Cabrera, Executive Vice President for Cushman & Wakefield, Inc. will receive the 2008 Corporate Leadership Award; and Robert A.M. Stern, renowned New York architect, will receive the 2008 Creative Arts Award. Previous honorees include Sheldon Harnick, Bruce Lundvall, Bruce Mosler, Alan Menken, Sir André Previn, John Sheafer, Stephen Schwartz, and Martin Sullivan.

The evening will be hosted by Broadway star Liz Callaway. Entertainment will include Philip Glass, Special Music School and Lucy Moses School performers, and a surprise, special guest.

We'll once again feature our crowd-pleasing Silent Auction with lots of exciting packages. Come prepared to bid and win.

The 2007 Honors raised over $700,000 – a Kaufman Center record! – which will support a wide variety of programs, including Merkin Hall's exciting jazz, classical, contemporary and Broadway concerts; scholarships for study at the Lucy Moses School; excellent academics and rigorous musical training at the Special Music School; community outreach initiatives such as the Suzuki Program, a partnership with the Manhattan School for Children; and performances for local elementary schools and day camps.


MUSICAL EVENINGS
Musical Evenings benefit the music program of the Special Music School, which provides conservatory-style training to musically gifted students during the regular school day and is funded entirely by the Kaufman Center. These unique musical experiences occur in private homes around the city and include a cocktail reception and an intimate performance by world-renowned artists.

Past Musical Evenings have featured artists such as Emanuel Ax, Joshua Bell, Carter Brey, Concertante, Sharon Isbin, Lang Lang, the Mendelssohn String Quartet, Garrick Ohlsson, Cynthia Phelps, Philip Setzer, Gil Shaham, Arnold and Natasha Steinhardt, Carol Wincenc, and Eugenia Zukerman. As Joshua Bell said last year, "to hear chamber music in a salon setting is to experience the vivid intimacy originally intended by the composer."


ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP LUNCHEON

The annual Scholarship Luncheon honors a friend of the Center who has changed lives through his or her passion for the arts; proceeds from the event provide scholarships for students committed to pursuing arts education at the Kaufman Center’s Lucy Moses School.
