MUSIC THEORY

AN INTRODUCTION
Indispensable for anyone studying voice, an instrument or sight-singing, the study of theory provides a fundamental background, accelerates music learning and enhances creativity. Topics include music notation, intervals, scales, chords, keys and other basic materials of music. Reading music is not required. No prior knowledge of music theory is necessary.

BASIC HARMONY
Basic Harmony is designed for students who have already taken Introductory Theory as well as those who are comfortable with the basic materials of music. Students will learn to analyze and construct chord progressions, modulate among different keys and design small musical forms. This course also serves as an introduction to the analysis of classical choral and symphonic repertoire and as preparation for music composition.

PUT IT IN WRITING
Do you hear singing in your head? Do you have music humming in your ears and want to write it down, develop it and elaborate it as an original composition or arrangement? A practical workshop in notation and composition, aimed at developing the skill of putting sound, as imagined by the composer, in writing.

YOU WRITE IT, WE PLAY IT
In this hands-on composition and performance workshop, students will write either original compositions or arrangements for the voices and instruments of their fellow students and get a chance to hear them first hand. The works will then be refined and finally performed for the class at the end of the course. See and hear your musical ideas come alive! A basic ability and willingness to sing or play an instrument is required.

BRING A FRIEND
Find a friend or colleague with whom you share an interest in a musical project, ANY musical project: a duet you would like to compose/ arrange for the two of you; a musical work you would like to learn in detail; a musical topic you would like to explore. A self-customized workshop for two students interested in a joint musical venture.
