Student Life
Being a student at Special Music School means you are involved in an active community of teachers, administrators and families working together to build a unique and exciting new venture. Our school, which integrates academic study and instrumental training for musically gifted children, is the only school of its kind in this country, in that it provides this rich study beginning in the very earliest grades.
We asked our students to share with us their feelings on Special Music School. Here is what they said. . . .
Frances Condon
3rd Grade (2008)

What do you like the most about your academic classes and your classmates?
"I think that these teachers can really make up cool things."
Why do you like going to the Special Music School? What's special about it?
"I think it's special to learn about music because not every kid has the chance to be able to learn about music and get to be able to play an instrument, and it's very cool that you're one of the kids that can get to do that."
What is something you like about the Special Music School that isn't related to music?
"It's small and so there aren't big things, like tons and tons of kids in the lunchroom all at once. It's like little groups. A lot of people are working hard for you and you're really appreciated and not all schools can be this organized."
Haley Gillia
7th Grade (2008)

Why do you enjoy studying music, playing your instrument, and performing?
"My teacher is really great and he's so inspiring and just learning about music is a great experience and it informs a lot of other things that I do."
What do you like the most about your music lessons and classes?
"I'm never afraid to ask questions with the teachers that I have."
What do you like the most about your academic classes and your classmates?
"The teachers we have are really smart and the classmates are always really supportive of me and everything that I do."
Why do you like going to the Special Music School? What's special about it?
Being able to have a regular academic school and also being able to have music lessons, playing an instrument, chorus, ear training and theory, it all comes together and that's really special because not many schools have that."
