Tips for Students
Here you'll find useful information for students, particularly for those who are just starting with us. We update our tips from time to time, so do check back.
Practice Tips
- Every practice session should have a clear manageable goal.
- Include several activities in your practices Switching among several different kinds of activities can keep you from getting frustrated.
- Practice should include repertoire and exercises, sight-reading of something completely new, and something from the old repertoire. *
- Try sight-reading for a good break from working on pieces.
- Be creative with the instrument. Music from the movies? Improvisation? Why not?
- Lay scales with different rhythms, or play them getting louder going up, softer going down.
Lunches
The Special Music School does not serve hot lunches. While most students choose to bring their own lunch, you can also receive free lunches from the Department of Education. Contact the school office if you wish your child to receive a school lunch on a daily basis.
Transportation
School Bus
Many children who live in School District #3/Division 10 are eligible for the yellow school bus service. A child’s age and proximity to school determine eligibility. See the Principal to establish your child’s eligibility. Bus schedules and stops will be distributed to eligible students at the beginning of the school year. Friday and half-day schedules vary. Several other schools share our bus. Parents should arrive several minutes early at the bus stop.
Metrocards
Children who are not eligible for yellow school bus service and who do not live within walking distance of the school qualify for free Metrocard passes. Lost or stolen Metrocards must be reported to the school office.
Car pools
Some families who live in the same area, particularly outside Manhattan, have developed informal car pools. Others have hired vans for groups of children. Contact the school office for additional advice about transportation.
Getting to school by MTA bus
Take the M5, M7 and M104 to the Broadway and 67th St. stop, or the M11 (from the west side). From the east side, take the M66 crosstown to 67th St.
