Young Artist Program
An Alternative Course of Study for Highly Motivated Young Musicians
The Kaufman Center's Young Artist Program (YAP) offers highly motivated music students a comprehensive and unique course of after-school study. For grades 9-12, the extra-curricular program runs at both the Special Music School and the Lucy Moses School and is an exciting and challenging course with a competitive admissions process.
Course Description
Grades: 9–12
Running time: 30 weeks (a full school year)
Classes meet Sundays and Mondays. Lessons and coachings vary.
Fee: $4,900
Each week YAP students have a 90-minute private lesson, 60 minutes of ensemble coaching, a 60-minute seminar-style class exploring music theory, literature and composition, and a 60-minute ear-training class. In addition, they participate in a monthly performance class and regularly scheduled solo and chamber music recitals. These are held at the Lucy Moses School, the Special Music School and additional venues.
Students are required to fully participate in all master classes, workshops and specialized seminars, and to represent the program through public recitals and performances.
Participants in YAP also meet on a regular basis with program administrators to discuss their progress. Extensive support is provided for students who are interested in pursuing music studies in college.
Admissions Process
Admission to the Young Artist Program is highly competitive and requires a separate application, interview and audition. For those students who require tuition assistance, an additional application is required. Visit the Application Forms page for more information and to download the forms.
Each student is evaluated mid-year and again at the end of the school year to assess progress and achievements. Students also assemble a portfolio of written work and community service for end of year review. Re-admission to the YAP program follows an annual review of these assessments.
