Bang on a Can's People's Commissioning Fund, a uniquely democratic commissioning program, has become one of the most anticipated launching pads for emerging composers. This year's concert will feature world premieres by renowned Turkish electroacoustic composer Erdem Helvacioglu, avant-garde inventor Tristan Perich and Ken Thomson, who writes for everyone from the American Composers Orchestra to his own band, Gutbucket. No ensemble has done more to make contemporary music accessible than the Bang on a Can All-Stars and they attack these annual concerts with a particular gusto. They will also be joined by avant-gypsy singer-violinist Iva Bittová. WNYC's John Schaefer will host.
