2 Steinways. 6 hours. 14 Pianists. 100 Metronomes.
Merkin Concert Hall's Grand Piano Marathon will be a six-hour journey through the varied landscape of piano music, featuring fourteen masterful and inventive pianists from the worlds of classical, contemporary, jazz and popular music. This mega-concert will include Michael Riesman—Music Director of the Philip Glass Ensemble—playing a suite from Glass’ Dracula soundtrack, a world premiere by Pulitzer Prize/Grammy winner William Bolcom, performed by long-time Merkin Concert Hall friend Ursula Oppens, as well as performances by John Medeski, Orli Shaham and Vijay Iyer.
Pianists, Brian
Ge (age 10) and Farrah Dupoux (age 15), students at
the Kaufman Center, will perform John Adams' Hallelujah Junction. Lucy Moses School Director Igal Kesselman will perform Rachmaninoff's 2nd Piano Sonata.
Throughout the afternoon, in the newly redesigned lobby, students of the Special Music School will present three performances of György Ligeti's Poème Symphonique for 100 metronomes, conducted by Merkin Hall Director, Gregory D. Evans.
